8 Ways to Improve Your Salon Business

If you’re looking to dramatically improve the health of your salon business, here are 8 absolute “must do” tips that will increase your bottom line and the overall success of any business.

  1. Have a Business Plan.  If you don’t have one, make one.  This is all about your goals and how you are going to get there.  If you don’t know where you are going, how will you know when you get there?  Once you have your plan, it’s your road map to success.  Look at it monthly and see if your actual results match your projected results.  If not, make the changes you need in order to get there.
  2. Get a Profit and Loss statement monthly.  Know how to read it.  Tell you bookkeeper how you want the P & L set up in order to give you the information you need.  Watch the percentages.  If you see a change here that could lead you in the wrong direction, find out the cause and correct it.
  3. Know the important numbers to track constantly.  Client retention, retail to service number, rebooking, new clients, average service and retail tickets.
  4. Take the time to work ON your business and not IN your business.  Steering your business to success is a job in itself and if you are spending all of your time working behind the chair, you are probably working to pay your stylists, rather than them working to pay you.
  5. Have a set of guidelines for your team to follow. (Your Policy and Procedures manual.)  Create the rules that everyone needs to play by and that includes YOU as the owner.  Not having guidelines for your staff means chaos.  Everyone wants to do their own thing which does not create a team.  It’s your business, you decide how you want things done.
  6. Be a leader/mentor to your team.  You need to develop your stylists in order for them to be their best.  You need a team that is enthusiastic, wants to be successful and be part of a successful salon and also wants to earn great money.  Work with them, communicate constantly, know their goals, show and help them to be their best.
  7. Share your goals and your numbers.  The more you involve your team with your business the more they will feel included and want to be a part of your (and their) success.
  8. Reward and celebrate good ideas, good performance and success.  Nothing motivates your team members to do better than being recognized for doing a great job.

Follow these guidelines for your salon and watch your business grow!
