I’ve talked about the dangers of stylists not doing patch tests and some of the chemicals that can be potentially harmful in hair color, both professional and drug store, but here’s a very revealing video from Global News, Calgary.
Don’t worry about the ad first. Just wait for the video to play. You need this information.

The latest studies show the carcinogen phenylenediamine (PPD) in hair dye builds in the body and increases allergy.
Dupont, its manufacturer requires a protective cap in their MSD-sheet but dye companies only include gloves. Patch tests are not
reliable. SEE: Federal Law, title 21, Sec.740.18.
Blending lightest colors first with a cap gives natural youthful
up-to 100% coverage, less root notice over solid-color look.
Thank you Inga, great advice. There are, of course, several companies now who do not use PPD in their color. However, for those who do, the lighter the color, the less PPD is in it.
Interesting that the manufacturer actually advises to have a protective cap. One of the main challenges is for the stylist, particularly the stylist who does a lot of color. It has been shown to product throat, lung, kidney and bladder problems. Stylists should probably wear a mask, however, how confident would the client be if that were the case?
