At the beginning of the year is a great time to have a one hour meeting with each of your team members and find out what their goals are. What are their earning goals, how many clients do they need to achieve this, how many days per week do they want to work and how many clients per day would be their ideal in order to reach the goals? What are their ultimate career goals? This can be a tough one as many of your stylists will want to own their own salon. Make sure that they understand that this is the ultimate goal of many stylists and they are safe in telling you this. When would they want to do that. What education do they feel they need, what amount of time and money will they need to put aside to do this? How can
you help them in this.
What about their personal goals, they are important too. Again, most people have goals about their family, clothing, holidays, living situation and many other things. Many of their goals translate to money, so helping them to realize how much they need to put aside in order to achieve these goals will also help you to reach your goals of income and productivity in the salon. Many stylists are not great at money management, so helping them to budget and manage this area will help them on a personal basis.
Ask them about salon systems and get feedback. Welcome suggestions and encourage each team member to think and find ways to improve the salon, the service and ultimately, their career. Your team members need to know that they can come to you if they feel something is not working and that you will listen. Even if a suggestion is not feasible, never “blow them away” and tell them that it’s stupid. This will shut them down. Ask them to think about how their suggestion would affect the clients, other team members and the salon in general. It’s better if you can get them to figure out it won’t work for themselves.
Your first meeting of the year would be a longer one. You will need to work out with your people what their daily goals are and how they can achieve them, what tools they will need and what systems they must use, as well as how much money they will need to put aside each paycheck to work towards that holiday or new car. Once you have this, a quick one on one every 2 weeks to check on their progress will help them to stay on track and allow them to see their growth.
